hereīs a little guitar lesson, some prior knowledge required. Modes and applications.
Ionian: No alterations, major scale
applications: Major triads, major 6th and major 7th chords
Dorian: flat 3rd, flat 7th (all minor scales contain flat 3rd)
apps: Minor 7th (iim7 ii-V in jazz styles), minor 6th chords.
Phrygian: flat 2nd, flat 3rd, flat 6th, flat 7th
apps: Spanish progressions, metal riffs w/ flat 2nd (E5-F5)
Lydian: #4th
apps: Major 7#11 chords
Mixolydian: flat 7th
apps: Dmoniant 7th chords (V7 of ii-v in jazz styles)
Aeolian: flat 3rd, flat 6th, flat 7th (natural minor scale)
apps: minor triads, minor 6th and minor 7th chords
Locrian: flat 2nd, flat 3rd, flat 5th, flat 6th, flat 7th
apps: minor 7/flat 5 chords, viim7flat5 chords, augmented 7th triads (this one can sound really evil)
Okay, now a short bit on how they go together. hereīs each mode with its corresponding scale degree: Ionian (I), Dorian (ii), Phrygian (iii), Lydian (IV), Mixolydian (V), Aeolian vi), Locrian (vii). So in the key of F maj, they would be as follows: F Ionian, G Dorian, A Phrygian, Bflat Lydian, C Mixolydian, D Aeolian, E locrian. If you know a little about guitar, but donīt get modes, this should help you. Post RELEVANT questions and Iīll answer to the best of my ability. Have fun.
