LAHAD DATU - Several fighter jets were seen flying over Felda Sahabat at about 8.35am Thursday.

The aircraft are believed to be heading toward Kampung Tanduo and Kampung Tanjung Batu where Sulu gunmen have been involved in firefights with Malaysian security forces.

Shootouts with an unspecified number of gunmen occurred in Kampung Tanjung Batu after Malaysian security forces expanded their hunt for the armed invaders who were earlier holed up in Kampung Tanduo.

The security forces have widened their hunt from the village, about 160km from here, towards Kampung Tanjung Batu, some 2km from Kampung Tanduo yesterday.

The shootouts had reportedly occurred in three locations from 4.15pm.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said police and military personnel were moving into Kampung Tanjung Batu at about 3pm when the shootings occurred.

"We believe we have killed some of the enemy although we cannot confirm the number for now. There are civilians at Kampung Tanjung Batu," he said, adding that no Malaysian security members were hurt.

Earlier, at 6.45am, security forces are believed to have shot dead a Sulu gunman at Tandau after they were fired upon in their mopping-up exercise.

Malaysian security forces are now facing battle-tested, Malaysian-trained commanders of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), who know Sabah like the palm of their hands.

Hadji Acmad Bayam, former chief propagandist of the MNLF, revealed this yesterday to the Manila Bulletin, adding that these MNLF forces may have at their disposal a huge arsenal, which they hid deep in Sabah's rugged terrain when they returned to the Philippines after their rigid training.

Among the firearms are Belgian-made G1 and FAL, which the late Libya leader Colonel Moammar Khadafy supplied through Malaysia.

Bayam said he was confident the Malaysian authorities were not able to find the hidden MNLF firearms because they were kept very well by the MNLF commanders who stayed behind in Sabah.

During that training, Malaysian military trainors even joked about the firearms at the MNLF training camp on Jampiras Island, off Sabah, as they turned over Khadafy's weapons' supply.

"We are not even sure if the firearms we are giving you will not be turned against," the Malaysian trainors had said in a jest.

"Well, speaking of self-fulfilling prophecy," Bayam said, recalling the jokes of the Malaysian trainors.

Another major issue is the Malay majority provinces controlled by Thailand. I'm surprised Malaysia has not done more to take them.
