Curious, but how did the tree get in the way? Isn't the camera able to be moved away from the tree to an open area? Or was this tree floating in space too? I'm confused about the tree???

Dr. Astro, Always like your post's. While I sit in the Back of the class wondering?

Just how Big are these Satellites? I saw a Bus size? Is that correct?

Are these Satellites swinging in a Banana type movement as the second Video shows?

With the fuel contained in these Satellites how long would you expect them to remain in there Obits?
After there fuel is near gone would you think they would give them one more thrust and head them out into the unknown universal trash can. Or burn them up on sending them back to earth.

Re: A Close Formation of Satellites
That's a cool video Doctor, nice work and I'm glad you shared that. The precision they can accomplish is amazing.

How fast are those moving? Do they use any other formations?

I've been catching satellites while night sky watching using that site that is frequently linked to here.

I noticed that green karma, noted.

5* thread.
 Quoting: 7thAdamu

They can vary the formation and spacing as needed to get the data they need on magnetic reconnection. There are rather lengthy papers out there about how this is accomplished. They're moving quite fast at perigee, some 22,000 mph at max according to NASA.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

22,000 mph, damn. Very cool stuff.
What exactly are they worshipping here?

Re: A Close Formation of Satellites
Great work Dr. Astro. Were you using the software that you developed to track these satellites? How long will these satellites be in this formation for this mission?

Kind of a dumb question, but have you ever seen any unidentified flying objects? I know with your level of experience, education, and intelligence that you know that there has or is other intelligent life in the universe. I know that the chances of them reaching earth are slim and that they probably would not be interested in such a uncivilized species but I figured I'd ask anyways.

Once again thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us here at glp.

Re: A Close Formation of Satellites

The MMS mission is studying magnetic reconnection between the earth and sun. Recently they became the tightest formation of satellites after reducing their spacing to 6 miles, and also hold the records for the fastest and the highest altitude functioning GPS receiver.

[link to www.nasa.gov (secure)]

Of course all those records may have been broken at some point by classified military satellites, either US or otherwise, but for civilian satellites it's not too shabby. I tracked them in orbit last night, in spite of their exceptionally low altitude over the horizon.

They became significantly dimmer over time as they ascended towards apogee, but I was dead asleep by then and unable to compensate by increasing the exposure time. Still, you can see how dramatically changed the formation appears after it re-emerged from being obscured by a tree. The satellites are designed to reach their optimal formation near apogee (the farthest point from earth in the orbit) and becomes more elongated near perigee (the closest point to earth).

 Quoting: Dr. Astro

LOL, how can you prove those are SATELLITES??? Got any actual pics of one to share??? Of course you don't, because it's just more BS from whores like you and NASA.
ratdanceratdanceratdance
 Quoting: RD47 63636737

Ummm....can you prove they're not satellites? Of course you can't.

I saw Naval satellites fly over in formation once. Freaked me out so much I had to go home and look them up. I never saw two sats fly in formation before like that. But I've watched hundreds of satellites and the ISS fly over dozens of times. It's an awesome sight.

I've also had two triangle ufo sightings that freaked me out way more though. That was way more awesome and a bit scary and unnerving. When a TR3b flies over you tend to know what you're looking at. When you see one you know you're seeing one. When you see another one a year later you really know they're real. My impression is that they are military.

Now if you can prove there are not satellites in orbit that would be awesome. Really, really awesome.

Bring your proof. Show us like Astro showed us this tight formation.

But until then...you have no say.

There is so much man made garbage in space that it has become a hazard.
 Quoting: M1.618

No need to worry just like anything else that get into orbit, or something, starts falling and over time it comes down and it can fall on your head. Just like a meteor could.

What goes up must come down because of our gravity idea brings them down as the earth magnetic field bring in small comet or what ever ice or dropping from planes toilets used to do, them things were dangerous.

We know from what science taught us that the earth has a strong gravity field and that why it take so much force to get off the planet, so, they also said anything in space will be pulled back to earth. Just duck they are going to keep trying.
Sorry I got a headache

Great videography. Do you happen to know how far away they are? Do they reflect sunlight all night?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 72183987

At perigee they're a bit above 1000 km, at apogee they're at about 70000 km altitude.
They generally have line of sight to the sun throughout the night.
Off the top of my head they were about halfway to apogee by the end of the video, but I'd have to look up the exact numbers.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

Can you point me the math for such a 7to1 apogee/perigee
and the total mass of the satellite (including thruster propellant)

Hey Doc,

What about the night vision battles posted on YouTube, have you ever seen anything similar? Is it bunk?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 39647545

Let's just say... I could have easily claimed that the objects were in fact a triangle UFO being followed by a plasma orb and that the streaks were weapons fire from earth trying to shoot them down. Or alternatively, the triangle was a TR3B and the object behind it was a pursuing UFO catching up to it. Who would be able to prove me wrong? If I didn't tell you what it was you were looking at, how would you know? An unscrupulous person armed with this level of equipment is capable of doing some serious damage to the credibility of UFO believers everywhere...
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

love ur answer
so the question is do you believe in UFOs?
