Re: How is the economy affecting YOU?Quote

My life is completely falling apart. I work only 10 hours a week...my son helps with my car payment...i only owe 2 more years... i cant really afford to drive. I have serious medical issues with no insurance... have to buy my prescriptions. I'm in debt with no solutions. I don't really know what to do anymore. And I can't afford to eat much anymore...so I do a lot of fasting. Other than that...life is grand!

write a screen play. NOW!

Topic...

Boy meets girl, Girl meets another boy through the boy that loves her. The boy that the girl loves, falls in love with her mom. Her moms dad falls in love with the first boy. The first boy is forced to tell her dad that he doesn't love him and that he loves he little girl. So the to men work out a plan to hook up the Dads wife with the boy that the girl loves to get the boy that the girl loves, out of the picture.
So that the first boy can get a chance to fall in love with the dads little girl. The dad does all this for his love of his little girl and the love of the boy. Thinking that if he can't love the first boy then he can show him how much he loves him by helping his little girl fall in love with the first boy. The mom falls in love with the other boy and that frees the dad to leave his wife and move to san fran. Where he finds happiness with a female that looks like boy.
The dad wasn't gay he just knew in his heart that his true love looked like a boy. He couldn't figure out why he was attacked to the boyish look of women. Fill in the rest with good wit and funny flash backs and stuff and you'll be rich.

Call it "Blinder Love"

I would write it has a screen play and sell it.

Get to work your window is closing. You have 12 weeks.

I already wrote a perfect screen play, but it wasn't comedy... seems I didn't make any money. Funny thing is... it really has been coming into play...literally.

Tried buying generic brands in hopes of saving a few bucks. What a joke. Made a VERY small difference at the checkout stand.

Rarely go out to eat anymore, and we always eat leftovers now so we're not wasting food.

We are doing okay, but it's my children I worry about. My son is being layed off from his job at the end of the month (layoffs abound)...he's got 3 small children to feed and lives paycheck to paycheck.

Have you noticed when the price of oil went up, the price at the pump went up...yet, this week, oil has dropped every day, and guess what? The price at the pump is still going up!! WTF is up with that!!!

Commods are priced in futures. You'll notice that they'll usually state "May 08 delivery" or Sept futures.

In order to link todays price, you need to determine what closing price in the past is used.

Chances are, 4 dollar gas is from 110 barrels. We have to cycle through 111-140+ dollar barrels before we go back down to this weeks levels.

It'll probably be next spring.

I just recently started saving money and that's coming along just fine. Not really effected as of yet. Started buying tobacco in the can (which i was meaning to do for ages anyways) which is for the most part like quitting smoking financially (less than a buck a day at my pace).

The psychological impact however is much larger

Are you serious or just being kinda sarcastic? You're saying that gas won't go down for almost a year, but will continue to go up, skyrocketing in about 8 months from the 140+ prices we saw last week?

If that's the case, then going back "down" to this week's levels is actually looking at, what, $5.50-6.00 a gallon? Or more?

I feel VERY lucky to be where I am right now after reading this thread. My wife and I make a very decent salary, we have zero credit card debt, good health insurance, lots of days off, nice house in a nice town that has somehow avoided an illegal worker intrusion. Our 401ks are down, but we live well below our means and have done so for a while now. The economy is mostly not affecting us.

Indeed. And that includes our parents, who are not doing as well. My friends also know that any time they need a no interest loan, all they have to do is ask, but for the most part they are doing well too.

We don't go anywhere.

I don't use my refrigerated air in the house. Every room utilizes box fans and/or ceiling fans instead.

I have a sissy garden now. That's explained in Omega's garden thread. LOL!

We don't eat out.

We re-use and we glean.

We shop thrift stores.

If we are cutting wood for a project, we keep the scrap. If it's too short for another building project, it gets splintered into kindling.

The only "convenience" foods I buy now are frozen veggies, aged cheeses, luncheon meats, and spaghetti sauce (I save the bottles and re-use them). I don't buy INSTANT anything.

I bake at home...but I just haven't perfected my bread yet. I refuse to use whey or added gluten in it.

We don't go to the movies anymore. The adult kids (two are home again) rent movies on Wednesdays, and we have "movie nite" with them.

We stopped buying sodas.

...............

Damn, maybe all that is why I feel healthier than I have in months? Whoduhthunkit!!!

I guess the way this economy affects me is I am just plain sad.
Sad for the world my kids are growing up in and fearful for their future. I am in my mid 40's and the world I grew up in was alot better than the shaft they are getting. Yah they have video games which have screwed them up and made them numb to the crap of daily life, but my kids don't get video games so they are even more screwed

I am a substitute teacher mainly because I go to school full time and my daughter has a rare bone disorder. So I have no work right now. I can't collect due to the fact that I have a job to go back to in the Fall. I am looking for a summer job. I apply I call, but never hear back.

As for the food I am ok, I stocked up and we have a cheap supermarket near us that has not gone up in price too much like the other ones.

Milk is too much money, I drink only organic.

The other think I did was do research on on rational cooking from WWII. I found some great recipe books and have tried several of the recipes and they are great!!! I would not change these books and would continue to use them any day over the Food Network.

I have a mini-garden growing on my balcony and I have found a very inexpensive farm stand down the street that has the best non-GE corn or tomatoes!!

Thank you and i hope everyone else is ok. I guess as long as we are ok, even though we are miserible we are ok.

Good for you. You're about a thousand times better off, in this case, than anyone who's had a job for 2 years, has had money to buy excessive things, and can't be happy with the stuff they have.

Imagine all of those people who have been immersed in the life of commercialism and materialism. Who have believed sincerely that the brand of shoes they wear make them feel fulfilled or the type cars they drive are important to their livelihood. Imagine how they're going to feel if all of their "things" disappear.

One only hopes they step back and are able to realize, as you have through the past couple of years, that happiness is not dependent on what you have.

Good for you.

I make sure to have staples in the house for cooking and have stopped driving except when it is necessary.

Have a bike now, ready to go if that is the only way to get around.

Always conservative, eating habits haven't changed much.

For extra money selling old stuff and junk at an antique mall. So far, I meet that month's rent, plus a little check at the end. I'll have to do better to make all the work worth while.

Considering dropping satellite TV. Without that I have no TV because I'm in the mountains. We'll see.

Canceled family reunion this summer because gas was too much for everyone to drive. We'll probably get together once a year, instead of twice.

Almost never go to the next town where the big stores are. Shopping at Dollar Store and local produce vendors.

Re: How is the economy affecting YOU?Quote

No thanks to the economy at all, but...

For the first time since I signed on the dotted line 15 long and painful years ago at age 17, my family and I are almost debt free.

To tell you the truth, as long as we can stay employed long enough to pay off the last of those bloodsuckers (a couple months), I don't give a rats ass what else happens to their stinking economy. I have to give them some credit though. Their greedy ways caused us to sit up and say "NO MORE!". The exercise has been painful but enlightening and we've now got the skills to live off of basically nothing.

That payoff moment will mark the first day of the rest of our (free!) lives and we'd rather eat bugs and live under a tarp than make another one of those fuckers rich off of our misfortune.

If we can stay employed longer, that's a bonus. After a year of not paying the usurers, well be able to buy our first home without needing one dime of anyone else's money. But if that never happens, I don't care.

I feel very sorry for people who are not as young and educated/employable as we are. Hopefully one day we'll be in a position to help others get out of debt slavery.

Godspeed folks. It really really sucks that people are able to benefit so much from the misfortune of others.

I work for Verizon Fios. Last year I had about 20+ hours of overtime. Now, NOTHING.

I cut my cable tv service and switched phone service to Vonage. Keeping my internet for 41.00/mo. Put up an antenna.

I literally have about 180.00/wk left over a week after paying all bills EXCEPT credit cards (which I have stopped paying).

180/wk with a wife who doesnt have a job and two boys.

YES, THIS SUCKS NOW. But I do have stored food+water.

Pulling 80.00/wk out of bank and into my safe.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2199

Impossible. Can you add? 180 minus 80 minus 10 equals 90 lousy bucks a week for a family of four?!

Either you dont have a safe or you are still tapping money from somewhere.

1.) I've learned to dip 2 for 1 bags of chewing baccy for my nicotine habit, about $1/wk

2.) Dollar tree, where everything's a buck has super deals on frozen food, and SO MUCH more!

3.) Use my bike for under 3-mile trips, fortunately I live in flat Florida.

4.) Switched to Geico for car insurance

5.) H.W heater is on lowest setting

6.) Ceiling fans unless its over 90 degrees

7.) Use Craigslist religiously to publish my services

8.) My Ebay store only charges .13 per month w/picture for goods I sell

9.) I drive a 1990 Jeep Cherokee and although a gas monger, I own it and cost per mile remains low

For those of you who say that you are cutting back on food, your pain is real I know because I buy groceries too. I'm not minimizing that. But please, recognize that beans and rice can form the basis of a very healthful diet and they're nearly free. Bananas, potatoes, eggs are also pretty good bang for the buck. You can't plan to eat less of what you always ate, if you want to be healthy and satisfied. You must reevaluate your diet and you can be healthy and well fed. God bless and good luck.
