I work for Verizon Fios. Last year I had about 20+ hours of overtime. Now, NOTHING.
I cut my cable tv service and switched phone service to Vonage. Keeping my internet for 41.00/mo. Put up an antenna.
I literally have about 180.00/wk left over a week after paying all bills EXCEPT credit cards (which I have stopped paying).
180/wk with a wife who doesnt have a job and two boys.
YES, THIS SUCKS NOW. But I do have stored food+water.
Pulling 80.00/wk out of bank and into my safe.
Impossible. Can you add? 180 minus 80 minus 10 equals 90 lousy bucks a week for a family of four?!
Either you dont have a safe or you are still tapping money from somewhere. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 447493
Not impossible, Take home 1,011.00 wk. 40 hrs. After rent AND ALL BILLS PAYED EXCEPT CREDIT CARDS I have 180/wk left over. Rent is 1,500. Car Payment 388.00 and so on, gas blah blah. After everything i have 180 left. save 80.00 spend other 100 on entertaining kids, myself, wife, clothes whatever. It's getting bad |

mj-13 User ID: 464494 7/18/2008 8:51 PM | | Re: How is the economy affecting YOU? | Quote | These past couple years, my business has taken a real beating. As far as the economy goes, it has been at least that long and not just an "over night" crisis. As an independent plumbing contractor, I have seen a real transition. We used to have very steady work for quite a long time but it has gotten so slow that I have had to look for other positions just so that my wife, daughter and I can keep our heads above water. Every year we would go on at least one week long vacation. Not any more. Almost every day, I would eat out for both lunch and dinner (with family). Now we cook and eat in. I bring my lunches to work (every day). As a driver, I use to drive 90 or nothing. I mean "bat out of hell". Now, I drive like a snail and try to keep all of my trucks (business and personal) with as little of cargo as possible (to bring down the net and gross curb weight). All of this in order to spend less on gas. Rarely do I go out to the movies any more. If any thing, my wife and I entertain friends and family with both dinner and conversation at our house. Maybe we'll play card games or watch a video (on demand or DVD). When it comes to utilities, I turn off the A/C in the summer (or heat in the winter) just before leaving the house for work. Before going to the grocery store, my wife and I now cut and coordinate coupons. We do a lot more freezing of food stocks, in order to save money on groceries. I think now that I have seen how bad things have gotten, I have become not only more humbled by the experience (of course the worst is yet to come), but I am much nicer to my fellow man. I will go out of my way to hold the door for someone. Or maybe it is just a saying of "hello" to a stranger or a waving of the hand in greeting another. I just hope things get better and by that I mean soon. As far as I feel about it, I think we are all in this together and we need to think as one (not "one" as in a billion individuals). We need to be there for each other and put away our petty differences. Who gives a shit if one of us is black, white, yellow, or red. Who cares what religion we practice. We are all one my friends, and that is what matters. If we think like that, we can make it through the trying times. God bless us all. |

Mom works part time (me) as well as runs the home, dad kick ass working on cars and computers for way less than the chains will work on them for. We are KICKING ASS!
Finally FINALLY everyone is staying at home so they wanna keep the computers going, AND they want their old used friends' cars that they bought for a few hundred up and running,, so my husband fixes them so it saves them the gas.
So yeah, husband gets another back rub, AND his favorite dinner. NOT because he's the MAN, but because HES THE MAN, with the TALENT, that brings in the groceries...
Now, to be fair, the groceries arent always as fresh as I like, but Farmer's Market's, neighbors, and trading my own basil, oregano, and onions doesnt hurt any. |

You are a relic of the Cold War and a product of Hollywood. America lived fine with "we" before the propaganda against communist ideology erased whatever community we used to know -- a betrayal of what we were, to be better robots against the red menace. How many raised before 1940 were purged from society? How many fled the false US it had become?
Same as the fanatic jihadis were created, your individualistic "contract with society" philosophy was born of myth and only served the purpose of controlling your thoughts, your fantasies and most importantly your identity....
Now, you are just in the way.... |

How is it affecting me personally? I'm a pro at what I do, I do the work of three men every day so I'm always employed. I'm paying triple fuel prices but I can handle it.
How does it affect my perception of society? I'm fucking pissed. I see piece of shit corporatist bankster cocksuckers that never did a lick of real work in their lives, who contribute nothing to the world, sucking up more and more of the sweat and blood of honest hard working people barely making ends meet now, who are going to freeze to death this winter because they can't afford fuel to heat their homes.
I listen to the bullshit the mainstream media tells these people about how the "mullahs" are the problem and how we need to kill more brown people on the other side of the world to make it better and most of the under educated brain damaged populace subjected to mind limiting chemicals foisted upon them by the same corporatist pricks making all the money swallow the lies whole.
I'm pissed off. But you know what? Once Joe Six Pack can't afford his six pack anymore he's gonna start asking questions for the first time in his life. And I'm gonna be there for him.

Let's shock the shit out of the ptb and despite the above living conditions still find $10.00 or more a month to contribute to someone with even less. Piss them off royally!!! Do it and feel the enormous satisfaction that I do. Despite it all!!! (Or maybe to spite it all)! |

As mentioned on one of the pinned threads above, it seems like some people are already really affected by this change in economy and some are not.
Take an honest look at your life without the GLP doom mindset if you can, and tell me how the economy changes have affected your day-to-day life. What are you sacrificing? What have you lost? How has your life gotten worse?
You don't drive as much? (How has that made your life worse?)
You can't afford as many groceries? (How has that made your life worse?)
You can't afford to pay a mortgage on a house? (How has that made your life worse?)
You lost your job? (How has that made your life worse?)
I'm not implying anything. Just curious. Quoting: CKTC 465434
CKTC, thank you for posting this thread. I'm fascinated by the range of responses here, and saddened for the posters who've had the rug pulled out from under them. There a people here who are truly suffering.
On the whole, it hasn't affected me personally all that much because I've always tried to live within my means. I have a house and a job.
Other than having to give up cable tv (which I hate to admit really sucks), plus a few girly luxuries that I've eliminated, like getting my nails done every two weeks (Don't miss that). Also, I bought a rolling machine to start making my own cigs.
Oh, and I was able to take nice vacations when the second income was here, but that's been gone a good 3 years now. Haven't been out of the state, other than a couple of bus trips.
Yet I'm affected indirectly more when I look around my city and suburban areas and see the big picture, the downhill slide of closing businesses beginning with the local ones and then moving up to the chain stores; the depressing downtown full of hoodlums where it was once thriving and bustling, and all of the homes for sale that aren't going anywhere.

OMG Michelle $8.99 for Knudsen's juice???? I love their cherry juice. Last time I checked it was either 5.99 or at the most 6.99 at my grocery store (I'm in Ohio).
BTW - I'll tell you what, a cool night out in Cleveland also would run about $100.00! lol So NYC sounds like a bargain to me. I'm embarrassed to say that I've never been there.
