Why would you do that when you are the one who made the decision to spend the money on something you probably didn't need with money you didn't have?
The economy hasn't hurt me at all. Life goes on as usual.
The house is paid in full, the car is paid in full, car insurance is only 500.00 a year, house bills only total 200.00 a month, about 300 pounds of rice stored, tons of dry beans stored, lots and lots of canned goods, water, and odds n ends. Hubby stocked up on the ammo.
It helps to have an excellent salary. |

I agree AC. I haven't experienced the third world as you have, but I have friends who did and told me about it. It sounds like you're referring to India, where one of my friends went to for business a few years ago.
In American, the welfare recipients live like kings compared to the abject poverty in the third world.

SHEESH. give me a F'ING break. you ungrateful people have absolutely no clue how well off you are. travel throughout India sometime and then tell us how poor you are (i have...you're FLAT OUT filthy RICH, ALL of YOU PATHETIC WHINERS, DISGUSTING!). Quoting: you're all ignorant 468380
So we have no reason to complain until we reach the conditions of India's poorest. That makes me feel a whole lot better...
Thanks alot Sinbad for your inexplicable wisdom on this matter,,,
However, In many cases with the poor in the US it is MORE difficult to survive than in a "third world" nation,,,
At least many poor can prosper in an underground economy, at least they have lower expectation of what constitutes material comfort, at least they have a strong network of family and friends, at least they can exploit their skills with minimal fuss... etc...
I seriously doubt you really understand the socio-economic reality of most "third world" societies. |

Go figure.
The poor in the US are extremely unhealthy because the US first world nation offers cheap "alternative" foods, that arent nutritious. In the third world the healthiest food is the cheapest and markets are prolific....

Yeah, you know what some families have to do? Sell their kids to the "underground" mafia. And you know what the mafia does? Maims the younger ones. They pair up a slightly older one, who carries the young crippled one and they're sent out on the street to sell figurines of Hindu gods to the tourists. Those who make their quota of rupees for the day get fed. Those who don't starve. When they get older and can't pull in the pity, they're thrown out with the trash. "No, can't help. It's their karma."
Don't even bother, you're clueless. |

Still flaunting your knowledge of the third world by worse case scenarios in India, are you? It seems that's all you know.
Terrible, isnt it? I saw that on TV. The caste system in India, or child soldiers in Uganda. Terrible and far worse than conditions in the rest of the world. But that isnt representative of the "third world". Or didnt you know that?
Dont even "bother" discussing my examples of WHY it IS better for many of the poor in third world countries, than those poor souls in the US.

What, if any, has been the recourse of stopping paying credit cards? I have been thinking of doing this, but am wondering what recourse there is. I work road construction and we're having a super rough year, like NO WORK! Apparently the Gov wanted to impress his college teacher wife and stole our 600 million that was alloted for heavy highway and gave it to education.....BASTARD. Times are tough, I get 20 hours a week if I'm lucky, which is a far cry from the 65-80 I am used to in the summer.
Wondering recourse of just stopping paying. Just paying house, heat, lights, phone. Also, got our summer fill amount due August 15th, $2.26 a gallon, I usually prepay 1000 gallons, well, that won't be happening this year, so back to a little wood burner to take the edge off.
Work seems to be the problem, *if* I had work, we would be doing same as always, but we don't go out to eat or any of that fancy stuff. We just stay home and fix the ranch!
Thanks! |

No, I saw on TV a similar story about the urban poor of India, trapped by the caste system. Coincidence? But again, that system is reflective of the third world that is a cultural peculiarity.
It would help if you could discuss other exeriences, in other third world countries, somewhere other than India. You seem jaded and angry by your India trek. You probably werent there for very long, if at all, and were disgusted more than perceptive. Sorta like how you view the poor in the US....
Now if you had lived in a third world country and didnt use such extreme examples to exaggerate your argument, than your opinion would be that much more credible...
You would be on par with people like myself who understand exactly what they are talking about, and who are clear with the discussion: the US is like a third world country (the fellow never said the US was like India).
Your inability to grasp that not-so subtle distinction is indicative of your lack of worldy experience IMO. |

How is it affecting me personally? I'm a pro at what I do, I do the work of three men every day so I'm always employed. I'm paying triple fuel prices but I can handle it.
How does it affect my perception of society? I'm fucking pissed. I see piece of shit corporatist bankster cocksuckers that never did a lick of real work in their lives, who contribute nothing to the world, sucking up more and more of the sweat and blood of honest hard working people barely making ends meet now, who are going to freeze to death this winter because they can't afford fuel to heat their homes.
I listen to the bullshit the mainstream media tells these people about how the "mullahs" are the problem and how we need to kill more brown people on the other side of the world to make it better and most of the under educated brain damaged populace subjected to mind limiting chemicals foisted upon them by the same corporatist pricks making all the money swallow the lies whole.
I'm pissed off. But you know what? Once Joe Six Pack can't afford his six pack anymore he's gonna start asking questions for the first time in his life. And I'm gonna be there for him. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 464984

I stopped paying credit cards (2) worth just over $10,000 combined. That was 3 years ago now.
I recieved letter after letter from collection agency after collection agency.
All saying that if I didn't pay that they MIGHT or MAY proceed with legal action. IT NEVER HAPPENED !!
Unsecured debt ( which credit cards are) is a risk that the companies take. As far as I or several friends have found, legal action is only a threat and never acted on.
Its been over 14 months since I've heard from them.
Personal loans from banks are the same. As long as no collateral is tied up to the money, don't pay it back
AT worst all they do is black list you from obtaining anymore credit for 5-7 yrs.. |

Too bad. I had much more to say, given a worthy adversary, to back up the "unheard" of idea that the US poor have opportunites that are less than even those in the third world.
It isnt as fantastic an idea as one would think, as my examples shown.

I work for Verizon Fios. Last year I had about 20+ hours of overtime. Now, NOTHING.
I cut my cable tv service and switched phone service to Vonage. Keeping my internet for 41.00/mo. Put up an antenna.
I literally have about 180.00/wk left over a week after paying all bills EXCEPT credit cards (which I have stopped paying).
180/wk with a wife who doesnt have a job and two boys.
YES, THIS SUCKS NOW. But I do have stored food+water.
Pulling 80.00/wk out of bank and into my safe.
Almost forgot, QUIT SMOKING BUTTS AND BUYING BEER ! No more going out to eat either. So, yeah, this is better for my health. It just sucks that I didnt do this before and was actually able to save the money I dont have anymore...lessen learned Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2199
I admire your ease of just being able to quit two of the most addicting substances on earth at the drop of the hat, i guess if it comes down to food or beer..well either will work, smokes are negligible though Applaud.
