Re: How is the economy affecting YOU?Quote

i live in a small tourist destination in northern Australia and i can say that we are being affected, inflation, high fuel prices, high food prices, high interest rates and the list goes on.

These are just personal observations and we have noticed, our International and local tourist numbers are down about half if not more, construction of commercial and residential has nearly come to a complete stop (they are just finishing off the back log with no new orders). Alot of houses for sale and they have lost value by about 10%. Local businesses are showing signs of high stress and would say possible closures coming soon.

We have alot of Wealthy international and national people who have holiday properties here and they have over the last couple of months have been placing there properties on the market(5-10 million bracket) with no buyers. The local economy here is totally reliant on tourism.

Personal thoughts:

The dicks that run the local economy here thought tourism was the only way to go with no other industry other than sugar cane (which is shit). On a national level Australia suffers from the brown necklace syndrome (head up arse)and only pulls it out for next meal. Australia is about to get a really big slap

I believe no individual country is to blame we all created this mess.

PS. People are not whinging but are being observant in there own individual or surrounding environment, which can be a gauge of the real economy along with the economic stats.

Re: How is the economy affecting YOU?Quote

As mentioned on one of the pinned threads above, it seems like some people are already really affected by this change in economy and some are not.

Take an honest look at your life without the GLP doom mindset if you can, and tell me how the economy changes have affected your day-to-day life. What are you sacrificing? What have you lost? How has your life gotten worse?

You don't drive as much? (How has that made your life worse?)

You can't afford as many groceries? (How has that made your life worse?)

You can't afford to pay a mortgage on a house? (How has that made your life worse?)

You lost your job? (How has that made your life worse?)

I'm not implying anything. Just curious.

I've cut back on my driving. Probably a good thing since the miles were really racking up on my minivan. But my travel time was also my time to think & listen to music that is soothing. (music my family hates)

I've learned to do without all my cleaners. Just buy the cheaper stuff & make it work just as good.

Between my 4 different part time jobs. One job, the work has been cut by 50% & the other one, the work has been cut by 90%. The kids have learned there isn't as much to go around & when we go shopping for clothes, we hit the Goodwill & clearance racks at the retail store first before we look at anything else.

We don't get to run the A/C as much. We get by on ceiling fans & windows fans. I let the laundry pile up more so that I'm washing more clothes using the same amount of energy. (Whirlpool Duet Washer & Dryer) I hang stuff out on the line as much as I can instead of running it thru the dryer. This takes more time & can be a hassle if a storm catches me off guard.

I'm having a HUGE rummage sale on July 25th. The first one in a LONG time. I'm hoping to sell enough to buy school supplies & clothes for daughter the following week. I only need about $125.

I fill the car when it is above 1/2 tank so I won't have to see a 120 hit for gas. Sixty is bad enough and that's what a half tank costs me or nearly that.

We don't eat out nearly as much as we always have. Over 20 years together we usually eat out 3 to 5 times a week. Now, it's maybe 1 or 2 times a month and we go to cheaper places, too.

My daughter is in college and her allowance has always been $800/mo. I asked her if she could get by on a little less for a while. She was fine with that and now it's down to $600/mo. This is her walkin around money. Everything like tuition, books, rent, food etc., are paid for directly.

I am going to a barber instead of a "stylist" and paying 20 for a haircut vs 80 or 90.

I get a manicure every 2 weeks and a pedicure every month. Not every week like I have done for a long long time.

I don't drive the BMW 750 unless I absolutely have to do so.

We don't take a "drive" on Sunday and put 200 or 300 miles on the car any longer.

We've got a huge home and just two of us in it. We're talking about renting out a room or two. The extra money would help. Not desperate for it, but it would help.

We're playing games together in the evening. Scrabble, card games, friends are talking about coming over for bridge or whist. Very different for us.

Don't do this, more gas = more weight for the car to move, think of all those stops and starts you do, every time you have to accelerate that added full tank gas weight.

It adds up.

thank you Tosspot.outside of happenings that are as typical to Australia as to the States and maybe some more ppl around the world who have their typical mess in their own country, I believe what you say, "no individual country is to blame we all created this mess."

Economies and cultures and customs may differ but rich and poor ppl are everywhere, and all governments look out for themselves first.

I have followed this thread closely and it seems like all of us here are banging our heads against the wall just trying to get by, knowing full well worse is coming down the pike.

I I lose my internet access (and I will hang on to it as long as I can) I will go to the library and stand in line for my 1/2 hr. just for the companionship and contributing to forums like this one. My sister uses the library for her access because she can't afford a phone for dial-up, she is alone and just keeps a cell like I do.

well, off to finish my dishes and tidying up. It's hot as hell here and I am cooling off in my living room before I go back out there (we keep one room cool in the house). hf

Well I have nearly always lived within my means and lived like a depression was coming Cheap or budget my kids would say. So I am just fine with $ in the bank.

I have always been shocked at they way most people lived.. as if there would never be a rainy day and our "have it all" consumer economy would go on forever.

I am currently being even MORE frugal..it's like a game to me.. because I think it is going to get MUCH WORSE. We will look back on the last 60 years as the "good old days".

Read about the Great Depression folks.. as GDII is coming.

Your comfort level will be determined by how you can prepare between now...and when it REALLY hits.

Sorry to be such a cup of joy... but you need to know this. hiding

I love driving around less... I'm helping the enviornment, I could be adding years to the life of some frog in bum fucked egypt because I'm not putting gases in the air because I cannot drive the thirsty car as much.

I love eating less beacuse the food has gotten more expensive... great diet plan eh?

I love the bank screwing me to no end... it's fun.

Yep having a great time, and the best part I will not get a raise this year... yeee haawww.

$600 walking around money for a college kid? $200 should be more than enough.

Get a Flowbee haircutting system, cut your hair for much less. I pay $5 twice a year to get my bangs trimmed up. A full haircut every 18 months for the Locks of Love program.

Manicure & pedicure? Talk about spoiled.

We eat out no more, and do all of our cooking at home. I don't waste a scrap of food, giving all left overs to two giant german sheppards. Clothes bought at good will, only brand new items we get are undergarments and shoes. Grow a huge garden to can veggies and share with our extended families. Save a fortune by making my own house cleaning supplies from cheap ingrediants such as white vinegar and baking soda.

This is the best type of poll there is for a feel for
where the economy's going.

As people cut back on their spending, lotta other folks
gonna lose their jobs. Can't be helped, that downward
spiral the wise talk about. Eventually deflation sets in.

Anyone that doesn't think we're going into Real Bad Times
after reading this, has his head up his ass.
